DUDLEY, Mass. (10/23/2024) – The Nichols College field hockey team honored their four seniors and secured a 3-1 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, on Wednesday evening from Vendetti Field.
The Nichols College Division of Athletics celebrated the Field Hockey Class of 2025,
Callie Worthington,
Emily LeBlanc,
Merle Steinau, and
Sophia Venable, before their win over UMass Dartmouth. Sophomore
Sofia Calabro finished the game with a goal and an assist, while Steinau and freshman
Asya Osei-Opoku each scored a goal. LeBlanc chipped in with an assist as well.
Nichols opened the scoring at the 3:04 mark, when Calabro skipped a ball past the Crosairs' defender and raced in one-on-one with the netminder and scoring on the breakaway for the 1-0 Bison lead. This was Calabro's sixth goal of the season.
UMass Dartmouth responded with a goal of their own in the second quarter and pulled even at 1-1 and that score held into the halftime break. The Bison outshot the Crosairs 13-2 in the first 30 minutes of the game.
Nichols scored twice in the third quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Steinau scored her third goal of the season with a goal off a penalty corner. LeBlanc found Steinau open at the top of the arch, and the shot hit the back of the net to make it 2-1 Nichols.
The home team was not done and Osei-Opoku capitalized on a rebound off a Calabro shot and snuck the loose ball past the goalie for a 3-1 Nichols lead and the Bison hung on for a 3-1 win.
Venable earned her fourth win of the season, making seven saves in the win.
Nichols will hit the road and travel to Bridgewater State for a non-conference match up on Friday evening. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
