Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Granato Sets Program Kills Record in Loss at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. (10/11/24) – Graduate outside hitter Haylee Granato etched her name into the Nichols women's volleyball record books on Friday evening, becoming the program's all-time leader in career kills at Widener University, where the team lost in straight sets, 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 10-25).

The Bison fall to 3-12 (0-3 CNE) overall with their fourth straight loss.

Granato set the record following an eight-kill performance against the Pride, bringing her career total to 621 across 76 matches played. Granato passes former outside hitter Jayleen Fegan, who formerly owned the record with 614 career kills from 2018 to 2022.

Granato's eight kills led the Bison offensive effort, while Kya Burdier chipped in five of her own on .273 hitting. Ruby St. Onge helped out with 14 assists on the night, while Liz Diorio hunkered down for a match-high 14 digs.

The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 12-12 in the first set until Nichols tallied four of the next five points to jump ahead 16-13. However, the fragile lead would not hold against an incoming 11-2 run by the Pride, which brought the score to set point at 24-18. Widener then went on to win the set 25-20.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Bison received a boost from eight Widener miscues on the way to a 15-7 lead by the midway point of the second set. Despite the eight-point edge, Widener turned the set upside down on the Bison with their own 12-2 run, which included seven consecutive points to make it 19-17 Pride. The remaining moments of the set featured four more ties between the two clubs, before Widener ended the set with three straight points for a 25-23 win.

Widener jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the final set and never looked back, extending their lead to as many as 15 points down the stretch at 22-7. The Pride finished out the night by the same difference, 25-10, completing the sweep of the Bison.

Women's Volleyball will remain on the road for a tri-match hosted by Rivier University (10-7, 5-1 GNAC) on Saturday, October 12th. The Bison will open with a 1:00 PM match against Babson College (16-1, 5-0 NEWMAC), before facing the host Raiders at 3:00 PM. All three matches will be held at Muldoon Gymnasium in Nashua, New Hampshire.
