HARRISVILLE, R.I. (1/20/2024) – The Nichols College men's hockey team threw everything they could at the Endicott College Gulls, before falling in overtime in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday night from Levy Rink. The Bison lost 3-2 in overtime to the Gulls.
Sophomore
Rocco Bianculli and junior
Kaiden Scott each scored goals for the Bison in the lost. Bianculli's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Senior
Dylan McMahon added an assist on the Scott goal.
The Gulls opened the scoring with a shot from the point that snuck through a screen and beat junior
Tyler Bost, with three seconds remaining in the opening frame. Endicott took the 1-0 lead into the dressing room, out shooting Nichols 10-6.
In the second period both teams traded chances but with just over five minutes remaining in the period, Bianculli intercepted a pass from the Gulls off the face off and split the defense to create a one-on-one chance with the net minder. Bianculli ripped a wrist over the glove and into the top corner to tie the game at 1-1. This goal was his first collegiate goal. Both teams headed to the dressing room with a 1-1 score.
Nichols grabbed the lead just 90 seconds into the third period off a turnover. McMahon forced a turnover at the Gulls' blue-line and drifted a back hand pass to Scott, who ripped the shot from the slot past the netminder for the power-play goal and a 2-1 lead for the Bison.
Endicott pulled even with just under two minutes to play on the rebound, that beat Bost for a 2-2 score. The game would remain 2-2 after 60 minutes of play and overtime was required.
Both teams traded chances in extra frame, but it was the Gulls taking advantage of a turnover at the Nichols blue line and the shot beat Bost, to give the Gulls a 3-2 win over Nichols and a weekend sweep of the Bison.
Nichols was a perfect 5-5 on the penalty kill and went 1-3 on the power-play. Bost made 36 saves for the Bison including 16 in the third period.
Nichols will welcome Salve Regina to Levy Rink on Friday night. Puck drop is set for 5:40 p.m.
