DUDLEY, Mass. (9/4/2023) – Sophomore
Taylor Breen scored twice, and junior
Sophia Venable stopped five shots as the Nichols College field hockey team shut out the Anna Maria AMCATS on Monday evening from Vendetti Field. Nichols won 2-0.
Breen scored twice in the game to push her 2023 goal total to five goals on the season. Junior
Merle Steinau tallied two assists while classmate
Callie Worthington picked up her second assist of the 2023 campaign.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 15 minutes of action, while the Bison carrying the majority of play in the first quarter. It was the Bison who hit pay dirt first. Breen scored on a rebound from the shot from Steinau to grab a 1-0 lead just under five minutes into the quarter. Nichols outshot Anna Maria 13-1 through the first half of the game.
In the second half, both teams traded chances and Venable stood tall in between the pipes for the Bison to turn away all of chances coming from the AMCATS. Nichols added some insurance in the fourth quarter with just over fine minutes left, thanks to Breen once again. Steinau had the initial shot and Worthington deflected the shot and it was Breen once again who finished off the play, for a 2-0 lead.
Nichols would hang on to a win and earn their first shut out since September 14, 2022, when they shut out Elms College, 6-0. Venable earned her first shut out of the season for the Bison in the win.
Nichols will return to action on Saturday, September 9 as they travel to Norton, Massachusetts and take on Wheaton College at 12 p.m.
