DUDLEY, Mass. (9/1/23) – The Nichols College football team opened up their 2023 season in Friday evening from Vendetti Field against the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs cruised to a 57-6 victory over the Bison.
The Bison totaled 333 yards of total offense in the game including 246 yards on the ground. Senior
Xavier Powell led the Bison's rushing attack with 86 yards rushing on 10 carries, while six other rushers each had at least one carry for Nichols. Powell and classmate
Joshua Vitti connected on the Bison's lone touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter.
Nichols and UMass Dartmouth, each opened the game sizing each other up and both teams having opportunities at opening the scoring. The Bison saw themselves find the end zone first, but a holding penalty whipped away the score and the Bison eventually turned the ball over on downs.
The Corsairs led 7-0 after the first quarter before exploded in the second quarter for an additional 29 points, to grab command of the game and cruise to an opening season victory. The Bison ended the Corsair's shutout bid, in the fourth quarter when Powell dropped a 15-yard pass into an open Vitti, for six.
The Bison fell 57-6 in the opening game. They look to rebound as they travel to Dean College on Saturday, September 9, where they will kick off against the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. from Franklin High School.
