Softball Splits First Home CCC Doubleheader with Curry

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nichols softball earned a hard-fought 5-3 win in game one before suffering a 4-3 setback in game two to Curry in its first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) home doubleheader of the season on Monday afternoon. After both contests, the Bison hold a 7-10-1 (2-2-0 CCC) record, while the Colonels now sit at 10-11 (1-3 CCC).

The squad will continue its CCC slate in a home doubleheader against Western New England on Saturday, April 8.

Nichols 5, Curry 3

In the opening game of the day, Nichols got on the board first when an Allie Siliman double to right center knocked in Bailey Littlefield, who reached on a base knock to left. Curry tied the game back up on a Karlie Pontes RBI single in the next half inning, before using a two-run top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom half, the Nichols bats would come alive, as a Mallory Gilmore RBI single to left field with bases loaded jumpstarted a three-run inning. Following Gilmore's big hit, Brianna Sulikowski slapped a 2 RBI double, scoring Erin Gour and Mackenzie Jackson in the process, to retake the lead from the visitors. Allie Brown's sacrifice fly with Gilmore scoring on the tag was all the offense either side would be able to produce down the stretch, as Chelsea Indyk closed the door over her 3.2 innings, striking out six while allowing just four baserunners, to earn her second win of the season.

Curry 4, Nichols 3

Curry took a 2-0 lead after Burke notched an RBI single and scored on an error in the top of the second. In the bottom half of the frame, Nichols would answer back as Brianna Sulikowski slammed a ball back up the middle to knock in two runs and tie the game.

The Bison would take its first and only lead an inning later thanks to an Ava Slavinsky RBI double to right center.

With both hurlers, Jillian Rogers and Alyssa Ouellette battling through the latter stages of the game, the Colonels staggered two runs over two innings, tying the game in the fifth before Karlie Pontes played the hero in the sixth. The sophomore stepped up to the plate and sent a ball down the right field line to score McDermott and boost the team to its first CCC win of the campaign.
