CCC Release
DUDLEY, Mass. — In a rematch of the 2022 title match, the top-seeded Nichols men's tennis team earned a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Roger Williams (16-3) to repeat as Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Champions. The Bison take home the trophy for the 13th time in the program's history, and the 11th in the past 10 seasons. Nichols swept doubles before earning wins at No. 4 and No. 2 singles to earn another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
After failing to secure points in the semifinal match against Endicott, the two top pairings of freshmen, including
Leon Zeis and
Frederik Bertrams and
Ludwig Schlatzer and
Yannick De Vet, each made no mistakes on the conference's biggest stage earning 8-4 and 8-3 victories, respectively. From there, the experienced duo of
Santiago Perez and
Caio Dieckmann put the Bison up 3-0 with an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
De Vet continued his strong play into singles with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Johnny Baldyga on the fourth court before Zeis clinched the match at No. 2, downing Ryan Carroll 6-3, 6-2.
In all unfinished singles matches, each Bison had won the opening set with Bertrams (6-0, 5-4, UF) and Schlatzer (6-4, 5-2, UF) a lone game away from clinching at No. 3 and No. 6.
Trevor Schwarzmann was in the midst of a battle with Jon Trevethan (6-1, 2-3, UF) on the first court before Zeis' final point concluded the match.
Earning the CCC crown caps off a tremendous season for the Bison who went a perfect 8-0 in conference play during the regular-season. First-year head coach
Ron Gendron loaded the schedule with challenging competition, as the Bison faced off against opponents from all three NCAA divisions throughout the campaign to prepare for the CCC postseason, in which the team downed No. 4 Endicott and No. 2 Roger Williams after receiving a first-round bye. Nichols now holds an overall record of 12-9 heading into its 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Nichols, who earns the CCC's automatic bid, will await Monday's selection show, slated to begin at 12:30 p.m., to find out its NCAA Tournament First Round opponent and location.
