DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols baseball scored a combined 24 runs on their way to two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victories over Curry on Saturday afternoon. With the pair of wins, the Bison improve to 10-16 (5-3 CCC), while Curry falls to 8-18 (3-7 CCC).
Nichols looks to continue their four-game CCC win streak on Tuesday, April 18 when they take on Wentworth at home at 3:30 p.m.
Nichols 12, Curry 4
The Bison got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Ben Jerome reached on an error, stole second, and then took third on a wild pitch before
Johnny Knox knocked him in on a sac fly. After a scoreless second inning, Curry led off the third with a double down the line and later tied the game with an RBI groundout.
Both teams were kept in check in the fourth and fifth innings, with starting pitcher
Jack Kabel recording four of the six outs via the strikeout. A base hit and two walks loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth for Curry. A base knock to right center scored two for the Colonels, and a sac fly made it a 4-1 game.
Nichols answered back in the bottom of the seventh, as
Brad Ellis led off the inning with a double in the left-center gap. After an infield pop-up,
Luis Vargas stepped up to the plate and got the Bison within one, launching a homer to left field. After Curry went quietly in the eighth, Nichols exploded for nine runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Ellis came up clutch with a two-RBI double to give the Bison the lead, and
Karl Miller, Vargas, and
Kelvin Gutierrez all picked up RBI doubles of their own to extend the lead. In total, Nichols collected eight hits with two outs to make it a 12-4 game.
Nolan Sullivan recorded the final three outs to give the Bison the win.
Vargas led the way for the offense, collecting three hits and three RBI.
Brennan Hyde added three hits in five at-bats, while also picking up an RBI. Kabel went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs and striking out eight.
Aidan Whitten and Sullivan combined for 3.2 scoreless innings, with Whitten picking up his first career win.
Nichols 12, Curry 2
Curry got on the board in the top of the first as a wild throw on a double play ball brought a runner around to score. The Bison wasted no time tying things up, as
Jim Marasco brought in Knox with a sac fly. After a scoreless second, Knox broke the tie with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot making it 3-1.
Nichols added another run in the fourth on a squeeze play by Jerome bringing home Miller. Curry cut into the lead in the sixth on two hits, but a double play and strikeout ended the threat. Much like game one, the Bison put up a crooked number, this time in the seventh, to blow the game open. The big swing in the inning came off the bat of Hyde, a three-run shot, to make it 9-2.
After a single by
Noah Sanabia, a double by
Stanley Cipkas, and a walk by
Andrew Croteau loaded the bases, Knox added another RBI to his daily total to make it 10-2. Two batters later, Marasco sent everyone home with a two-RBI double to left, giving the Bison the 12-2 win in eight innings.
Hyde, Knox, and Marasco combined for five hits and seven RBI at the top of the order. In total, Nichols collected 13 hits and only stranded three base runners all game. Senior
Patrick Sawyer was dominant on the mound, tossing eight complete innings and only allowing one earned run while striking out five.
