NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Nichols baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup with Anna Maria on Tuesday afternoon by the score of 7-6. The loss snaps Nichols' three-game win streak and puts the Bison at 7-16 (3-3 CCC) on the season, while Anna Maria advances to 13-11 (7-1 GNAC).
Nichols put the pressure on early as a
Brad Ellis double knocked in two runs in the top half of the first. The Bison added another run in the top of the second, this time on a
Brennan Hyde RBI single, his 100th career hit, to make it 3-0. Starting pitcher
Aidan Whitten escaped a jam in the bottom of the inning to maintain the three-run lead.
After a scoreless third, Hyde struck again in the top of the fourth, this time singling home
Andrew Croteau and advancing
Johnny Knox to third to make it 4-0.
Will Kleinhenz picked up an RBI on a groundout after the Hyde single to give Nichols a five-run lead in the fourth. Anna Maria got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Jarrod Marifiote to cut the Bison lead to three.
After the Bison were set down in order in the top of the fifth, Kosta Drosidis got the Amcats within one with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-4. Anna Maria used the long ball once again in the sixth, as James Powers connected with a three-run shot of his own to give the Amcats their first lead of the day.
Down to their final three outs, the Bison pushed one run across on an RBI single by Ellis, advancing the tying run into scoring position with one out. Anna Maria got a flyout and a groundout to escape the jam and secure the comeback win.
Ellis picked up three hits and two RBI on the afternoon to lead the Bison offense. Knox, and
Kyle Birks each collected two hits of their own in the loss.
John Steed was tagged with the loss, tossing two innings and allowing three runs on the home run by Powers.
The Bison play their third game in as many days tomorrow, April 12, when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a non-conference showdown with Worcester State. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
