DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 22-0 non-conference win over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Wednesday evening at Vendetti Field. The victory gives the Bison their first win in the opening game of the season since the 2019 season.
Nichols started the game off strong, pouring in 10 goals in the first quarter, with three of them coming off the stick of graduate student
Sam Ahaesy. The Bison added four more goals in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead into the half.
Nichols kept the pressure on, scoring three more goals in the third quarter as
Makala Dube, Emma Patton, and
Hadley Houghton all found the back of the net. Nichols netted five more goals in the fourth quarter to come away with the 22-0 victory in the first game of the season. The 22 goals scored are tied for the second most scored in a single game in program history.
The team's 57 ground balls sits second all-time in the record books for pickups in single game, led by Houghton who scooped nine.
Patton and Ahaesy led the way for the Bison with four goals each. Houghton added three goals and an assist, while
Caitlin Welch, Paige Alexander,
Sarah King, and Dube all finished with two goals. The Bison defense held the Hornets to just one shot, as
Keri Tremblay and
Jessica Volpi combined for the shutout.
Nichols looks to remain in the win column when they take on Emerson on Thursday, March 9 at Vendetti Field with the opening draw set for 5:00 p.m.
