CUMBERLAND, R.I. — The Nichols College women's tennis team came out victorious in its spring opener with a commanding 8-1 victory over the Emerson Lions in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Fore Court. In the win, the Bison improve to 9-6 (5-2 CCC), while the Lions fall to 2-3 (0-0 NEWMAC) on the year.
The Bison got out to a quick 3-0 lead with three doubles victory. Antonia Carrero and Jordan Knowles claimed the first victory of the day by a score of 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Charis Vogler and Johanna Schroeder followed up the first doubles group with a triumph of their own on court two (8-1). Kelley Carlin and Sophia Leonardi went on to give the Bison a 3-0 advantage, obtaining the sweep of the doubles action with an 8-1 win of their own.
Nichols would continue its momentum into its singles matches as well, as Carrero would handily defeat Steward by a score of 6-1, 6-1 on court one. Vogler would take care of business at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory to clinch the team's ninth victory of the season. Schroeder would add to the victory as she took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3. Camila Magrin beat her Lions counterpart on court four by a score of 6-2, 6-2 before Bethany Prendergast would take home the final victory for the Bison on court five with a score of 8-7.
The Bison are slated to face Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday, March 16th at the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Court as the first action in the squad's Spring Break trip.
