Brandeis Walks Off on Baseball, 5-4

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Nichols baseball team fell in the bottom of the ninth to Brandeis in a non-conference, neutral site clash on Sunday, March 12 at DiBenedetto Stadium on the campus of Trinity College. With the loss, Nichols slipped to 1-7 (0-0 CCC), while the Judges evened out their record at 2-2 (0-0 UAA).

John Pollock got the ball for his second start for the Bison this season and allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Nichols would go on to answer as Johnny Knox pushed Andrew Croteau across the plate, tying things up at 1-1 in the top of the third.

Noah Hickey's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth put the Bison up by one as Croteau scored for the second time in the game after reaching on a walk, stealing second, and getting to third on a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the inning, Brandeis' Alex Kim roped a triple which knocked in two unearned runs and put the designated home team back in front, 3-2.

Knox would score to tie the game on a heads-up base-running effort, breaking for home on a throw down to second as Ben Jerome swiped second in the top of the seventh before Zachary McCarthy's RBI single put the Bison ahead yet again, 4-3, in the top of the eighth.

Brandon Metivier entered in relief in the bottom half to pitch and allowed the Judges to tie the game back up at 4-4 after walking the leadoff batter and allowing him to advance three times and score on three wild pitches.

Nichols was unable to score in the top of the ninth and Brandeis would take advantage of the walk-off opportunity as Nick Heafey singled to get on, got to second on a throwing error, stole third, then was pushed in for the win on a Justin Keeler single.

Brandeis' reliever, Marc Maestri, earned his second win of the year, allowing only one unearned run over pitching 2.2 innings, striking out five, walking one, and allowing one hit. Jack Kabel, who entered in relief of Metivier in the eighth, ended up with the loss.

Next up for Nichols is the team's second trip south to take on Lebanon Valley in Annville, Pa. on Wednesday, March 15 at 3:30 p.m. and Shenandoah in Winchester, Va. on Thursday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m.
