HARRISVILLE, R.I. (12/5/23) – Behind a pair of goals from junior
Josh Dickson, including the game winning goal, the Nichols College men's hockey team topped Worcester State University, 4-2 on Tuesday evening from Levy Rink. Tuesday's game was a makeup from the postponed Woo Cup consolation game in late October.
Dickson found the back of the net twice for the Bison, while senior
Quinn McCarthy and freshman
Ryan O'Donnell each scored a goal. Senior
Luke Harvie,
Dylan McMahon,
Sebastian Miedema, sophomore
Jack Lee and freshman
Tristan Kimmen all tallied assists in the win.
McCarthy opened the scoring for Nichols at the 10-minute mark of the first period. Kimmen helped the puck put of the defensive zone and then delivered a blue line to blue line pass to Harvie, who gathered the pass in stride and raced into the zone. Harvie and McCarthy ended up with a 2 on 1 and Harvie delivered the perfect pass to McCarthy, whose snapshot beat the netminder for a 1-0 Bison lead. This was McCarthy's first goal of the season.
The Lancers battled back and drew level just under four minutes later on a breakaway. The first finished with the score knotted up at 1, with Nichols controlling the shot totals 20-12 through 20 minutes.
In the second period, the pace of play continued with each team trying to find the next goal. Nichols cashed in once again as time was expiring in the period. Nichol lost an offensive zone draw but a string forecheck forced a turnover that ended up on Lee's stick after intercepting the clear. Lee's initial shot was blocked by a defender, but the loose puck found Dickson, who fired the one timer past a sprawling goalie and into the open goal to pull Nichols ahead, 2-1. Nichols led 2-1 after 40 minutes of action.
Worcester State opened the scoring in the third period to once again draw even with the Bison. This time a goal coming shorthanded for the Lancers. Dickson tallied his second goal with 2:25 remaining the third period. Senior
Philip Bjorkman forced a turnover, and the loose puck was picked up Miedema, who sent a long stretch pass to McMahon. McMahon made a nice more to wiggle free to get a shot off, the shot was blocked, and Dickson skated on to the loose puck and faked a fore hand wrist shot and then made a back hand move to sneak through the five hole of the netminder for a 3-2 lead.
The Bison added some insurance thanks to an empty netter of O'Donnell, whose empty netter was his first collegiate goal and sealed a 4-2 victory for the Bison. Freshman
Nick Anderson earned his first collegiate win, making 31 saves in the win for Nichols.
Nichols (3-5-2, 2-5-2 CCC) continues their homestand as they welcome in UMass Dartmouth to Levy Rink for their first meeting since 2008 on Friday, December 8. Puck drop is set for 6:40 p.m.
