Dudley, Mass. (10/4/23) - On Wednesday evening, the Nichols College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Roger Williams University by a final score of 3-0 (16-25, 20-25, 18-25) at the Nichols College Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Bison slide to 10-5 (0-2 CCC) overall, while the Hawks improved to 5-9 (1-1 CCC) with the win.
Junior
Luna Colozzo led the Bison offense with nine kills, while sophomore
Kya Burdier recorded 13 assists. Defensively, senior libero
Liz Diorio led the floor for the Bison in digs with 14 on the night.
Roger Williams came out of the gate with a balanced attack, doubling-up the Bison by a 12-6 margin early in the first set. After the Bison rallied slightly with a 3-0 run, the Hawks then strung together five straight points to build their lead as high as 17-9. As a result, Roger Williams would march to victory in the opener by a 25-16 score.
Nichols opened the second set by scoring two of the first three points, which later resulted in a 5-5 tie between the two teams early. The score would later hold out at just 12-11 in favor of the Hawks as the Bison battled to keep it close, trading points with the opposition down the stretch. However, Roger Williams mounted a sizeable 6-2 run to provide some insurance for themselves down the stretch. Even with the teams playing fairly even the rest of the way, the Hawk lead would prove to be too much as Roger Williams took a 2-0 match lead with the 25-20 win.
The Bison continued to duke it out with the Hawks in the third set, coming back from a 10-6 deficit to tie the set at 10-all. However, the hosts found themselves on the wrong side of another Roger Williams run that saw the lead stretch to 16-10, providing the cushion needed to fulfill the sweep.
Up next, women's volleyball will play host to non-conference opponent Keene State College (LEC) on Tuesday, October 10
