HARRISVILLE, R.I. (10/28/23) – Freshman
Ema Jaskova scored twice including the game winning goal as the Nichols College women's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 record after finishing off a sweep of Salem State on Saturday afternoon. The Bison won 4-1 over the Vikings.
Jaskova scored her second and third goals of the season while graduate student
Kayla Currin and senior
Grace Wiggett each tallied their first goals of the season. Wiggett added an assist in the game. Senior
Madison Collins-Macedo registered a pair of assists in the win. Classmate
Katherine Segalla and freshman
Cela MacDougall each tallied assists.
Jaskova opened the scoring in the first frame as she broke in behind the defense on a partial breakaway and tucked the puck through the sprawling netminder's legs on her forehand for an early 1-0 lead and her second goal in as many games for the rookie. Nichols led after 20 minutes of action.
The Vikings scored the lone goal in the second stanza on a deflected shot from the point that found its way through junior
McKenzie Muir to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bison earned themselves a power-play opportunity just four and a half minutes into the third period and Jaskova wasted no time walking into the left circle and ripping a shot past the Viking's netminder for a 2-1 lead. Segalla and MacDougall earned assists on the goal.
Nichols doubled their lead when Wiggett flipped a puck out of the defensive zone to Currin. Currin worked her way down the left side boards and stepped into a slap shot that beat the goalie over her glove and extended the lead to 3-1.
Wiggett sealed the deal for the Bison with 4:01 to go in the game. Wiggett skated the puck out of the zone and fired a slap shot from center ice on the net. Wiggett's shot fooled the netminder and snuck under the bar for a 4-1 lead.
The Bison out shot the Vikings 36-18 and went 1-5 on the power-play and was a perfect 7-7 on the penalty kill. Muir made 17 saves in the win for Nichols. Senior
Anamary Pulgar earned some time in net for the Bison, in the final couple of minutes.
Nichols (2-0-0, 0-0-0) will start conference play next week as they travel to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott on Friday night. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
