PREVIEW: CCC Finals Up Next For Women's Tennis

DUDLEY, Mass. (10/23/23) - The Nichols Women's Tennis program are set to take on the Endicott College Gulls in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship on Tuesday, October 24 at 1:30 PM. The CCC Championship was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 21 but moved to Tuesday, October 24 due to expected inclement weather this weekend. 

HOW'D THEY GET HERE?
The Bison earned their way into the CCC championship match by way of 5-3 victory in their semi-final matchup against Roger Williams University. The Bison found their 5 points by way of two doubles victories, and singles wins by Antonia Carrero, Charis Vogler and Johanna Schroeder. In the other semi-final match-up the Gulls knocked off the 4th seeded Gordon by a 5-0 score.

CCC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Bison are no strangers to the CCC tennis postseason. They were runners up last season to Endicott and fell to Roger Williams in the semis the year prior. The Bison look to get back on top as they are 5-time CCC champions, most recently with back-to-back wins in 2019 and 2020. Tuesday's contest will mark the 11th time the Bison and Gulls have clashed in the CCC Championship match.
 
BISON TO WATCH
  • Johanna Schroeder got the clinching singles point in the semi-final for the Bison, winning (6-0, 5-7, 6-4). She won 8-1 alongside partner Sophia Leonardi in doubles action. In he regular season, she went 8-1 this year in her singles matches, with her only loss coming against Division I Bryant University. She is also 9-0 in doubles action, primarily beside partner Sofia Leonardi.
  • Antonia Carrero won her semi final singles matchup at number one (6-3, 6-2). In doubles she picked up an 8-2 victory in doubles alongside partner Charis Vogler. In regular season play, she posted 2-3 singles record at number one and, 6-2 in doubles play alongside Voguer. 
THE MATCH
The Gulls and Bison have met once so far this season, with Endicott taking the CCC regular season matchup by a score of 6-3. In that matchup, the Bison tandem of  Sophia Leonardi / Johanna Schroeder won 8-6 win at #3 doubles. In singles, Johanna Schroeder was victorious again for the Bison, getting a 6-3, 6-4, win at #2 singles. In the #6 doubles slot, Nichols' Camila Margin utilized a third set to get a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The winner of Tuesday's CCC Championship match will be named the 2023 CCC Women's Tennis Tournament Champion and will earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2023-24 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament later this spring.

The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), founded in 1984, is an NCAA Division III athletic conference composed of 10 full member and two associate member institutions throughout the New England region. Its membership aims to provide student-athletes with a positive experience in their pursuit of excellence through high academic standards, quality competition and a meaningful student life. The conference administers championships in 20 intercollegiate sports.
