DUDLEY, MASS. (10/16/23) - The Nichols College women's volleyball team picked up its 12
th non-conference victory of the season on Monday evening, prevailing in straight sets by a score of 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-14) over Anna Maria College in the Nichols Athletic Center.
The home win improves the Bison record to 12-7 (0-4 CCC) overall, while Anna Maria drops to 3-19 (0-9 GNAC) following the loss.
It was a career night for sophomore
Kya Burdier, who surpassed the 1,000-career assists milestone with a team-leading 16 on the night. Junior
Luna Colozzo led the charge the Bison with eight kills, a .438 hitting percentage, and seven digs on the night. Both Burdier and Colozzo each additionally snagged 4 service aces each. The two Bison also matched senior libero
Liz Diorio with seven digs each to help anchor the Nichols defensive effort.
The Bison took immediate control of the first set with an early 8-1 lead with the help of two kills, two service aces and three AMCAT errors. Shortly thereafter, Nichols ripped off two separate scoring runs to put the set out of reach at 19-5, capping in off with six unanswered points. Despite a late pushback by Anna Maria, the lofty lead would prove sufficient as the Bison secured the opening win by a 25-14 score.
The second set was more or less a similar story, with just as happy an ending as the first. In an attempt to bounce back, the AMCAT offense delivered a balanced attack that forced the Bison into four errors, resulting in an 8-8 deadlock between the two teams. However, things quickly shifted back in favor of Nichols as the Bison pieced together a massive 11-0 run, providing the hosts with a sizeable 19-8 edge. As was the case in the first frame, Anna Maria staged a late surge to try and narrow their deficit, but to little avail as Nichols wrapped things up with a 4-0 run to win 25-13.
In the third, Nichols promptly overwhelmed the AMCATS by scoring the first seven points of the set, which again included another pair of service aces by Burdier. Anna Maria would stick around throughout the midway portion of the frame, but eventually run out of options as Nichols completed the sweep by a 25-14 final score.
Up next, women's volleyball will clash with Commonwealth Coast Conference newcomer University of Hartford on Wednesday, October 18
th at 7:00 PM from the Nichols Athletic Center. The match will be considered a non-conference matchup.
