Men’s Volleyball Soars Past Regis (MA) In Three Sets

WESTON, Mass. – The Nichols men's volleyball team picked up its third-straight win on the road by sweeping Regis (MA) on Tuesday night at Higgins Court by set scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-20. The Bison now sit at 4-3 overall, while Regis dropped to 1-5 in the setback.

Junior setter Dylan Urbanski set the tone for the Nichols offense in the first set, handing out eight assists on 12 Bison kills. Tanner Soracco's kill at set point gave the Bison a 1-0 lead.

Nichols jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set two thanks in part to three-straight Regis errors. Leading by two later in the set, a Soracco service ace capped off a 3-0 swing following two Regis errors to put the Bison up 19-14, forcing the Pride into a timeout. After Soracco put his next serve long, Nichols rattled off six-straight points to run away with the second set. Carlos Mercado recorded two kills during that stretch while Luis Martinez and Dylan Knapp each tacked on one.

Trailing 5-4 early in the third, kills by Mercado and Knapp sandwiched a bad set by Regis' setter to regain a 7-5 Bison lead. The hosts would battle to tie the set four more times throughout the remainder of the set, but Nichols was up for the task on each occasion. Martinez gave the Bison a needed side-out at 20-19 to ensure Regis would never tie the match again, and he would follow that up with a service ace to put the Bison up 22-19. Nichols would never look back en route to a 25-20 set win to secure the sweep, their second in the last three matches.

Urbanski finished the match with 33 assists as the Bison finished with 38 kills. Martinez provided a team-high 11 kills while hitting .381 on the outing. Dylan Knapp hit at a .545 clip as the sophomore recorded seven kills on 11 attacks, with just one error. Urbanski and Knapp each recorded three blocking assists. Soracco again had an impressive performance out of the middle, hitting .500 with 9 kills. Mercado and Jake Harasyko led the team with six digs apiece.

Nichols will return to the court in a Saturday tri-match hosted by Emerson. The Bison will first face the MIT Engineers, who are receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 15 Coaches Poll, at noon, before turning their attention to the host Lions at 2 p.m. from Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym.
