Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Curry for First Conference Win

Nichols Women's Volleyball - Post-Game Comments - Sept. 28 vs. Curry

DUDLEY, Mass. – Behind a strong offensive showing, including a .302 hitting percentage, the Nichols women's volleyball team put together a sweep over Curry, notching their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win of the season on Wednesday at the Nichols Athletic Center. The Bison won by set scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-15.

Following a Haylee Granato kill, one of her team-best 13 on the night, putting Nichols up 8-3, the Colonels would ring off six-straight kills to take their first lead of the match. A four-point swing for the Bison put the home side up by one as Kya Burdier sent over an unreturnable serve for an ace, making it a 13-12 ballgame. Jenna Savoie came in to serve with a 20-17 lead and never let Curry side-out as the Bison rattled off five-straight points, including the set-clinching ace to take a 1-0 lead.

Jayleen Fegan's sixth kill of the second set put Nichols in a 23-12 lead in the second, but a late resurgence from the Colonels kept it close at 23-17. A Sydney Ball kill following a Curry service error pushed Nichols to a 25-17 set two win, putting the Bison in a position to secure the sweep.

Granato matched Fegan's six single-set kill performance with one of her own in the third game, as the junior middle led the offensive attack en route to a 25-15 win, locking up the first CCC win for the Bison.

Nichols more than doubled the Colonels in kills, as the Bison amassed 44 kills compared to Curry's 20.  Burdier notched 35 assists in the contest, her second most on the season and most in a three-set match. Fegan led the team in digs with 13 to go along with her 10 kills, good for a double-double.

Nichols looks to extend its 10-2 non-conference ledger as the team returns to play this Saturday, October 1 in tri-match play, traveling to Castleton, Vt. for showdowns with Western Conn. St. and host institution Castleton.
