Women’s Volleyball Victorious in Five Sets over Russell Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Nichols women's volleyball team got back on track on Friday night, as the Bison battled to a five-set win over Russell Sage at Robison Gym in their first match of the weekend. Nichols won by set scores of 27-25, 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12.

Three Bison recorded double-doubles in the team's eighth win of the season. Jayleen Fegan racked up 15 kills and 16 digs, Luna Colozzo had 11 kills to go along with 12 digs, and Kya Burdier dished out 32 assists while notching 11 kills. Burdier was matched by Ruby St. Onge on the assist tally, while Haylee Granato hit at a .292 clip, registering double-digit kills with 11.

The first set was tightly contested, eventually needing more than 25 to determine a winner. With the Bison up 22-18 following a Gators service error, Russell Sage benefitted from a pair of kills from Celia Gagnon and Caitlin Hammecker along with multiple Nichols errors to tie the set at 24-24.

Despite being down to a Gator set point, Fegan landed a kill, St. Onge provided an ace, and the Russell Sage offense was unable to convert, giving Nichols the 27-25 win.

After dropping sets two and three to trail in the match 1-2, the Bison put on a dominating display in the fourth game to swing the momentum in their favor. Colozzo nailed a kill following two errors from the home team, putting Nichols up 12-6, forcing the Gators into a timeout.

Following a Burdier attack error making it 20-15, Nichols rattled off five-straight points to take the set and force the match into a first-to-fifteen scenario for the second time in as many matches.

In the final set, the Gators battled to keep it close, including a stretch of six-straight points, but yet again it was Colozzo with the set-sealing kill to solidify the triumph for the visitors, 15-12.

Next up for the Bison is a Saturday tri-match hosted by Union. Nichols will serve as the home team in a noon showdown with Cazenovia before turning its attention to Union at 2 p.m.
