DUDLEY, Mass. – In its second contest as part of a tri-match hosted by Fitchburg State, the Nichols women's volleyball team swept Curry in a non-conference matchup, by set scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.
The Bison won their seventh-straight match, advancing to a new program-best for starting record at 7-0. With the setback, the Colonels dropped to 3-2.
In the first frame, Nichols jumped out to a 16-8 lead as the offense provided for six kills and four service aces over that stretch. Both teams traded points down the stretch, but eventually it was outside Sydney Ball's putaway that concluded the first set.
The Colonels jumped out to a 9-4 advantage in the second set, but the Bison battled to land five straight points to tie the set up at 9-all. Curry once again regained the lead at 14-13 and wouldn't concede it until a Jayleen Fegan service ace gave Nichols a 21-20 lead, as part of a 6-1 run to close the set.
Trailing by one in the third set, Ball rattled off three-straight aces following a Curry attack error to give Nichols a two-point advantage, 15-13. Using kills from three different hitters and mistakes on the other side of the net, Nichols cruised to a 25-16 third set victory.
The difference maker was service aces, as Nichols provided 15 over the course of the action, while Curry provided just three unreturnable serves. The Bison racked up 36 kills, while limiting the Colonels to 22 kills for a .062 hitting percentage.
Individually, Ball led the offensive push with eight kills, trailed by both Fegan and Kya Burdier who recorded 6-apiece. Burdier and Ruby St. Onge combined to dish out 29 assists, while Liz Diorio once again was the anchor on the defensive side, racking up 14 of the team's 50 digs. Haylee Granato and Luna Colozzo each stacked up two blocks in the affair.
The Bison will once again hit the road this Wednesday, September 14 in a battle of the unbeatens, as they face off with Eastern Nazarene (5-0) at the Lahue Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
