Bison advance to Semifinals with 93-86 win over WIT

DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Jaekwon Spencer led six Nichols College student-athletes in double figures with 20 points in a 93-86 win over Wentworth University of Technology Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinal action at the Nichols Athletic Center.

The Bristol, Conn. native – who was named CCC Defensive Player of the Year earlier today – finished with eight boards, three blocks and a pair of steals as the top-seeded Bison improved to 22-3 and advanced to the CCC Semifinals for the fifth consecutive season, where they will face No. 4 Suffolk University Thursday night in Dudley.

Graduate student Matt Morrow went 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with 17 points for Nichols. Classmate Matthew Alectus knocked down three triples and closed the night with 17 points and five boards while junior CCC Player of the Year Jakigh Dottin filled the stat sheet with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Bison opened up an eight-point lead at 24-16 midway through the first half following a three-pointer from Alectus. The Leopards (10-16) responded with a 25-17 run to tie the game at 41 on a three-pointer from Tommy Dooling. Senior Jason O'Regan closed the half with layup to send NC to the locker room with a two-point lead. WIT made 50 percent of its shots in the opening stanza compared to 40 percent for the Bison.

Nichols opened the second half on a 17-7 run to open up 60-48 behind seven from Spencer and four from Morrow. The lead swelled to 16 when O'Regan converted a layup at the 13:48 mark. Wentworth made one last run to get to within five points with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation before baskets from Alectus and Spencer, coupled with two free throws from Dottin, pushed the lead back to 10 points (83-73) with 3:10 to go.

Trey Carrier led the Leopards with 20 points while Jack Connell netted 17. WIT outrebounded the Bison – who shot 52 percent in the second half – by a 48-41 margin.
