EVERETT, Mass. - The Nichols men's hockey team scored five unanswered to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Allied Veterans Rink.
The Leopards (2-5-1, 1-4-1 CCC) got on the board just under five minutes in when Sean Brown snuck a short-handed goal past junior goaltender
Mathias Backstrom. They would add another with three minutes to go in the period.
With ten seconds remaining in the first frame, junior
Josh Dickson brought the Bison (4-4-0, 2-4-0 CCC) back within one goal. Sophomore
Nathan Carl forced the Leopards to turn the puck over in their own zone. Fellow sophomoreÂ
Luke Harvie collected the free puck and found Dickson alone streaking in towards the goal, and was able to beat Wentworth netminder Jack McGovern in the top right corner.
Wentworth's Josh Faussett was able to extend the lead back to two for the Leopards with a power play goal halfway through the second, but the lead would not last. The Bison exploded with three goals in as many minutes to close out the frame.
A stretch pass by junior
Philip Bjorkman found senior
Hunter Fraser ahead of the Wentworth defense, giving him the space to fire the puck past McGovern with just under eight minutes remaining in the second. Following the score, the Bison headed to the power play, and after running a set piece, Carl found the back of the net to tie the game. Just under two minutes later, junior
Dylan McMahon won the faceoff back to senior
Conor Leonard, who finished out the middle frame with the fourth goal of the game for the Bison.
At the 11:50 mark of the third, Fraser found the back of the net for the second time. Harvie collected a dump in deep in the Wentoworth zone, finding Fraser streaking in for the one-timer into the back of the net. With 39 seconds remaining in the matchup, sophomore
Kaiden Scott closed the game out with an empty net goal.
The Bison will take the Thanksgiving holiday off before heading to Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, Mass. on Friday, December 2, to face Western New England University for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
