DUDLEY, Mass. – Behind 523 yards of offense and six total touchdowns by junior quarterback
Xavier Powell, the Nichols football team secured a 49-28 triumph over Curry on Senior Day to end the season with a 4-6 overall record. In defeating the Colonels, the Bison earned their first win in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play of the season.
Curry broke the scoring open just under two minutes into the first quarter when Bailey Smith scooped a fumble forced by Michael Sims and ran it 55 yards to the house.
Kyle Yannucci delivered a 25-yard field goal with 10:26 remaining in the first to put Nichols on the board.
Justin Mullaney called his own number from one yard out add another score for Curry with 1:54 remaining, putting the visitors up 14-3.
Powell hooked up with graduate wideout
Hunter Ferreira for the first time at 10:14 of the second quarter, throwing on the run, to bring the Bison within 4.
Following a Curry score, Powell hit Ferreira over the middle for a 35 yard touchdown reception, bringing the score to 21-17.
As time expired in the first half, Yannucci drilled his second field goal of the half, this time from 31 yards out, to put the Bison down by just one at the half.
It was all Nichols on offense in the second half, as the Bison scored four touchdowns to the Colonel's one.
Joshua Vitti gave the home team its first lead of the game with 8:19 left to play in the third quarter on an 11 yard reception from Powell.
Under three minutes later, Powell stepped up and delivered a ball over the middle, finding his intended target in
Jack Morvan who turned on the jets and ran to the endzone for a 73 yard touchdown to put Nichols up 35-21.
Powell rumbled into the endzone from six yards out to double the Bison lead over Curry, 42-21.
Following the final Curry touchdown of the game, Ferreira recorded his third score of the game on a 31 yard pass from Powell, as he went up and over his defender to haul in the ball.
Powell provided 5 touchdowns on 483 yards through the air, completing 28 of his 39 attempts. Vitti was the prime target, recording 141 yards and a score on eight catches. Morvan also went over 100 yards on the day, with 112 yards on just four receptions.
Zahir Booker led the rushing efforts, with 54 yards on 13 carries.
Senior
Darnele Ryan made a team-high 10 tackles, while intercepting two Mullaney passes.
Derrick Revolus tacked on seven tackles while intercepting one pass.
Chris Copponi made 6 tackles while also intercepting a pass in the final game of his career.
