Nichols rolls into playoffs with win over Gordon

Sophomore Jaekwon Spencer continued his torrid shooting as he poured in 25 points in Nichols College's 82-70 win over Gordon College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at the Nichols Athletic Center in Dudley, Mass.
 
Junior Matt Morrow recorded a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds and senior DeAnte Bruton filled the stat sheet with 17 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals as the Bison moved to 17-8 on the season (12-4 CCC). Nichols outrebounded the Fighting Scots (12-13, 7-9 CCC) by a 53-41 margin and outscored the visitors 54-20 in the paint.
 
Senior Eric Demers – who entered the contest leading the nation is scoring – was held to 15 points on 4-of-18 shooting from the field. Freshman Garrett Sarrazahn led Gordon with 22 points – including four 3-pointers – while junior Parker Omslaer notched eight points, 10 rebounds, three blocks, and three assists.
 
Spencer was 3-of-3 from downtown and led all student-athletes in the first half with 14 points to help the Bison grab a 36-30 lead. Demers paced Gordon with nine points.
 
In the second half, Demers gave the Fighting Scots a 45-44 lead with 14:20 to go before a triple from Bruton and a dunk from Spencer three minutes later gave NC a four-point advantage at 55-51. Another dunk from Spencer at 9:30 pushed the lead to 12 before a fast break layup by Bruton extended the lead to 65-51 with nine minutes remaining.
 
Three things you need to know...
            -Tonight's contest marked the 48th all-time meeting between Nichols College and Gordon College. The Bison have won four-straight and 12 of the last 13 against the Fighting Scots, and now lead the series 28-20.
            -Morrow became the 30th student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career and joins Bruton as active members of the Bison to hit the milestone.
            -Nichols enters the playoffs with 17 wins for the seventh consecutive season.
