Gernander's game winner propels Bison to weekend sweep

Nichols College junior McKenna Gernander scored the game-winning goal just eight seconds into overtime as the Nichols College women's hockey team defeated Salve Regina 5-4 in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action Saturday night at St. George's Rink in Middletown, Rhode Island.

The Bison (4-9-3, 3-4-1 CHC) got on the board first with a goal from sophomore Kara Santoro at the 4:36 mark in the first period. Classmate Jordyn McGuire – who scored two goal in Friday's 2-0 win for the Bison assisted on the power-play goal to give Nichols to 1-0 lead early on. The Seahawks (4-12-0, 1-7-0 CHC) went on to score two unanswered goals (both power-play goals) from Tori Amaral and Maddie Cox to gain the 2-1 lead just two minutes into the second period.

With two minutes left in the second frame freshman Lauren Rokala found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career with a power-play goal to know the game at two goals apiece going into the second intermission. Freshman Kayla Currin gave Nichols back the lead 2:47 into the third period before sophomore Katelyn Joyal propelled the Bison to a two-goal lead just three minutes later.

However, Salve Regina came storming back scoring two unanswered goals for the second time in the game from Amanda Fantasia and Grace Schwartz to tie the game at four apiece. Nichols and Salve battled for the last five minutes of regulation in a 4-4 tie before forcing overtime. Gernander ended the comeback for Salve just eight seconds into the OT period giving the Bison the 5-4 win and the weekend sweep of the Seahawks.

-A total of seven Bison picked up at least one point in tonight's game.
-McGuire, Joyal and Santoro all picked up two points apiece in the game.
-Nichols is now 1-1-2 in overtime games this season.
