Leopards spoil Senior Day for Bison

Senior Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio dropped in a team-high 16 points in her final collegiate game for the Nichols College women's basketball team, which was defeated by Wentworth 71-63 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Athletic Center.
 
Classmate Rebecca Cleary and sophomore Shannon St. Lawrence each posted as double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bison (4-21, 2-14 CCC). Fithian-Giantonio, meanwhile, knocked down four 3-pointers and played nearly all 40 minutes.
 
Sophomore Erin Morin led the Leopards (4-21, 2-14 CCC) with 16 points while sophomore Stephanie Mini chipped in with 15 points and six boards and junior Emily Magasic had 10 points. The Leopards sank 10 3-pointers and shot 46 percent from the field.
 
The score was tied at 15 after one before the Leopards outscored the Bison 22-12 in the second to build a 37-27 halftime lead. The visitors shot 54 percent from the field in the opening stanza. NC climbed to within five late in the third quarter (48-43) following a three form Fithian-Giantonio, but could not climb any closer.
 
Nichols senior Callie Andrews filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in her final collegiate game.
 
Three things you need to know...
            -Today's contest marked the 34th all-time meeting between Nichols College and Wentworth. The series is now tied at 17.
            -Fithian-Giantonio finished her career with an even 100 games played, which is No. 9 in program history.
            -Senior Jennifer Downey made her first appearance on the court since the 2015-16 campaign and played four minutes for Nichols.
