Seahawks edge Bison with late goal

The Nichols College men's soccer team lost to Salve Regina 2-1 Tuesday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Semifinals at Toppa Field in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Seahawks got on the board first quickly with an 8th minute goal from Rich Ventura, assisted by Dana Sundell. Salve Regina possessed the ball for much of the first half, out shooting Nichols 8-1 in the first half as they went into the break with the 1-0 lead. Senior goalie Juan Carlos De La Cruz was credited with three saves in the first half alone, helping keep it a slim one goal lead for Salve.

The Bison came out strong in the second half, as the tied the game at one goal apiece after a 52nd minute goal from junior Ali Ali, his fourth of the season. The game remained tied for much of the second half until Jacob Guerra was able to find the back of the net with three minutes left in regulation to send the Seahawks back to the CCC Championship.
 
Three things you need to know…
-De La Cruz finished the game with six saves.
-Tonight's match marked the 33rd all-time meeting between the two programs.
-There were six yellow cards assessed in the semifinal match.
