Recap
The Nichols College football team suffered a 35-7 loss in its season finale to Endicott College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Vendetti Field on Senior Day.
Â
The Bison (6-4, 4-3 CCC) compiled 447 yards of total offense – including 351 through the air – but were hurt by a pair of mistakes on special teams and three turnovers. Senior signal-caller
Michael Pina tossed for a career-high 351 yards on a career-high 66 pass attempts, 12 of which were caught by classmate
Tony Martignoli – including a four-yard touchdown pass. Junior running back
Joshua Pierre-Charles rushed for 103 yards.
Â
The Gulls (7-2, 6-1 CCC) rushed for 195 yards and a pair of scores – one from senior Greg Ruff and another from freshman Anthony Bracamonte. Ruff scampered for 70 yards to lead the visitors, who converted on nine of their 17 third-down attempts and blanked the Bison in the second half.
Â
Following a special teams miscue by the Bison that gave the Gulls possession at the two-yard line, senior Joe Kalosky found classmate Justin McEwen in the endzone for a 7-0 lead. Nichols answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that Martignoli capped with his 12th career touchdown to knot the score at seven.
Â
The Gulls closed the half with a 27-yard field goal as time expired to take a 10-7 lead into the half. In the third, the Bison looked to tie the game with a 27-yard field goal, however the snap was muffed and the drive stalled.
Â
Endicott pushed its lead to 13-7 following a 33-yard field goal off the foot of senior Nick DiCairano 2:19 into the fourth and, following a three-and-out by NC, took a 21-7 lead on a nine-yard TD run from Bracamonte. Nichols turned the ball over on its next two possessions, both of which led to Endicott touchdowns. It finished the day 2-of-16 on third down.
Â
Sophomore
Joe Cox led the Bison with 13 tackles while classmate
Dylan Kehoe intercepted a pair of passes and senior
Sean McGuigan caused a fumble at the goal line early in the game that was recovered by Spraulding. Junior Tim Russell paced Endicott with 10 tackles.
Â
Three things you need to know...
-Pina finished the afternoon with a school-record 66 pass attempts, surpassing Chris Mullins' mark of 63 set against Curry on October 29, 2016. Pina finishes his two-year career at Nichols No. 1 in completions (355), No. 2 in both passing yards (4,221) and touchdown passes (36), and No. 3 in attempts (626).
-Martignoli's 12 receptions gave him 143 for his career and pushes him into first-place on the all-time receptions list at NC. Anthony Pillari (2006-09) was the previous record holder with 139.
            -Senior
Michael Spraulding finished the game with five tackles, giving him 236 for his career, which is No. 6 in program history.
