Nichols thumps Becker to go to 4-2

Recap
Senior Tony Martignoli hauled in seven passes for 128 yards and his first touchdown of the season in Nichols College's 40-17 win over Becker College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Football action at Vendetti Field.

Classmate Michael Pina completed 19-of-34 passes for 268 and two scores while junior Joshua Pierre-Charles rushed for 90 yards and two scores and also caught one as the Bison are now 4-2 (2-1 CCC) for the first time since the 2007 campaign. Senior Nick Nieuwhof intercepted a pass in the endzone for his first collegiate touchdown and sophomore Joe Cox racked up a career-high 16 tackles (13 solo).

Senior Alex Santiago opened the scoring with his fifth field goal of the season – a 33-yarder in the first quarter – to open the scoring and stake NC to a 3-0 lead. Nieuwhof's score followed a safety and extended the lead to 12-0 just 28 seconds into the second quarter. Later, Pina connected with Pierre-Charles for a 37-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 19-8.

A 28-yard scoring run from JPC and a one-yard TD reception from Martignoli in the third pushed the lead to 33-11 before an eight-yard scamper from Pierre-Charles in the fourth capped a 10-play, 89-yard drive and made it 40-11.

Freshman Randy Morgan rushed for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Hawks (2-4, 0-3 CCC).

Three things you need to know...
-Martignoli now has 125 career receptions, which is one behind Dave Sokolnicki (1994-96) for third-place on the all-time receptions list.
-Pierre-Charles has 10 career rushing touchdowns, which is tied for No. 10 all-time with John Lamontage (1990-91).
-Today's contest marked the seventh all-time meeting between Becker College and Nichols College. The Bison have won the last two games and now lead the series, 5-2.

Quote
"I'm so impressed with this team's ability to finish games. I thought we were a little sluggish offensively to start, which can happen coming off the bye week, but played well enough defensively to have the lead at half. Coming out of halftime, our offense did a great job of establishing the tempo of the game. They went from 25 plays in the first half to 44 in the second. JPC had a great game rushing the ball, and when Tony and Hunter get going, they are fun to watch and hard to stop. Defensively, Joe Cox continues to shine in his linebacker  roll. The defensive line, which has been our strongest unit, played very well again today. I couldn't be happier for Nick Nieuwof scoring his first TD. The DB's has their work cut out for them today trying to contain the run game. When you play a team like Becker, your DB's act more like linebackers and Dylan Mcnamara, Earl Jones, and Derek Rousso did a great job holding them in check." -Nichols head coach Dale Olmsted
