Bison edge Blazers to remain unbeaten

Recap
Senior Gregory Giglio tallied a goal and an assist as the Nichols College men's soccer team downed the Blazers of Elms College 3-2 Wednesday night at Leary Field in Chicopee, Mass.

Classmate Cole Houghton also tallied a goal while freshman Axel Areiza-Betancur netted his first collegiate goal as the Bison (3-0-0) remained unbeaten. They won a physical match that totaled five yellow cards. Once again, the Bison controlled much of the action, outshooting Elms 24-10.

Houghton opened the scoring 20:07 into the first half. Roughly 15 minutes later, Areiza-Betancur extended the lead by heading in a ball sent from Giglio. Nichols had plenty of chances to score in the first half as they outshot Elms 21-1. The Bison rang five shots off the post.

In the second half, the Bison found themselves only up one goal after Elms freshman Jonathan Roach played a clear off his chest and proceed to take a shot which deflected off a Nichols defender and into the net. Midway through the second half at 67:19, the Blazers tied the match when junior Babba Jaden was able to get a ball past junior goalie Juan Carlos De La Cruz with an assist from senior Shaquille Robinson. Less than 10 minutes later, Giglio drilled home his second goal - an upper 90 marker from 28 yards out - to secure the win for the Bison.

Three things you need to know…
-The win was the second against Elms in as many years and only the program's third since 2005.
-Elms held the advantage in fouls, 20-6.
-De La Cruz made four saves for the Bison as he recorded his first win of the season.

Quote
"I felt we completely outplayed Elms in the first half. In the second half, we came out very slow and flat, and they took advantage and tied the match. They scored on a ball that ricocheted from a defender clearing it and a dropped ball. We were very fortunate that Greg hit a tremendous shot to win the match for us." -Nichols head coach Chris Traina
