WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Nichols College men's tennis team won its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament First Round matchup with a 5-0 sweep of Baruch College on Friday afternoon at the Torrance Hunt Courts on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
The Bison improve to 20-3 overall and advance to take on No. 8-ranked Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in a 1:30 p.m. matchup in the Second Round. Baruch ends its season at 11-5 overall.
Nichols jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following doubles play as junior
Blake Norton and freshman
August Moeller posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over junior Jamie Zurro and senior Marco Gobbato. Sophomores
Guilherme Barbosa and
Peter Coletti posted the matching score in their win at No. 2 doubles over sophomores Lewis Pena and Michael Dozortsev, while sophomore
Brandon Howard and junior
Igor Markowski added an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles against junior Leonard Margolis and freshman Clement Lacoudre.
Sophomore
Jack Donaldson grabbed the first point of singles play, registering a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles against Lacoudre. Barbosa wrapped up the victory for Nichols by defeating Gobbato at No. 2 singles by the matching score.
In the other singles matches,
Brandon Howard led his No. 1 singles matchup with Zurro 6-2, 2-3, while
Blake Norton led at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 1-0, against Margolis. Moeller also held a 6-2, 2-2 lead at No. 5 singles over Dozortsev, while Lewis Pena led freshman
Brandon Stewart, 6-2, 1-2, at No. 4 singles.
