Nichols defeats Hawks in opener; second game ends in tie

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team scored a 5-2 decision over Roger Williams University Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Nichols Softball Field. Game two ended in a 5-5 tie after eight innings.

Game One: Nichols 5, Roger Williams 2
Senior Kendall Meehan and sophomore Cara Mayhew each went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Bison. Junior Jessica Kuelling also collected two hits while sophomore Alexis Ferris struck out five over seven innings to record her fifth win of the season.

Consecutive RBI singles from Mayhew, Meehan, and sophomore Taylor Commesso in the fourth helped stake the Bison to a 4-0 lead. The Hawks cut their deficit in half in the fifth on RBI singles from juniors Amanda Boulter and Micaela Pohl before an RBI double off the bat of Kuelling in the bottom of the frame made it 5-2.

Seniors Haley Ledbetter and Valerie Moran each finished with three hits for RWU.

Game Two: Roger Williams 5, Nichols 5
Moran staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single. Nichols tied the game in the third when freshman Colleen Callahan doubled home freshman Erin Kelley. In the fourth, sacrifice flies off the bats of Commesso and sophomore Taylor McIntosh gave the Bison a 3-1 lead.

The lead held until the sixth, when Roger Williams put up a crooked number and took a 4-3 lead behind RBI hits from Boult and Ledbetter. Commesso led off the bottom of the seventh with her second home run of the season to send the game to extras. Then, down 5-4 with two down in the eighth, Meehan plated Kelley with an infield single to tie the game again, which is when play was stopped due to darkness.

Freshman Shannon Morin gave up seven hits and four unearned runs with three walks and one K in 5.2 IP for NC. Sophomore Rachel Wandzilak tossed 7.2 innings for the Hawks and gave up six hits and five runs (four earned) with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
