Bison advance to conference championship with 5-0 win over Hawks

Recap
Junior Amarie Settiwongse scored a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles in Nichols College's 5-0 win over Roger Williams University Tuesday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Tennis Semifinals at the Robinson Tennis Courts.

Settiwongse – who teamed with junior Isabelle Leonardi for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles against RWU junior Jessica Magliato and sophomore Heidi Martin earlier in the match – was one of two NC student-athletes to earn two points on the afternoon. Graduate student Alanna Judd notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Taryn Roche at No. 2 singles and an 8-2 win over sophomore Morgan Crimmins and freshman Libby Bennett 8-2 at No. 3 doubles with junior teammate Lindsey Kaplan.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Megan Nathanson and Rachel McDonald edged the Hawks team of Roche and junior Riley Spillane, 8-6.

Both Nathanson (6-0, 5-2) and sophomore Juliana Herrera (6-1, 5-1) were one-point shy of closing out their singles matches when Judd secured the fifth and decisive point.

Three things you need to know...
-Today's match marked the 28th all-time meeting between Nichols (12-0) and Roger Williams (7-6). The Bison have won the last four meetings, but the Hawks still lead the series, 15-13.
-With today's win, the Bison advance to the conference championship match for the eighth time in nine years. The Bison are 3-4 in their previous seven championship matches, having captured CCC title in 2010, 2016, and 2017.
-The Bison defeated their opponent in Saturday's championship match, No. 2 Endicott, 6-3 earlier this month in Beverly, Mass.

Quote
"Overall, the girls played well. We carried the momentum of winning all three doubles matches into singles play and were able to earn a spot in the championship match." -Nichols associate head coach Eduardo Irizarry
