Lions topple Bison, 66-55

DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds in Nichols College's 66-55 loss to Eastern Nazarene College Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at the Nichols Athletic Center.
 
Daniels added four steals and three dimes while junior Brooke Packard (Dudley, Mass.) netted 12 points (6-of-7 free throws) in 39 minutes of action. Sophomore Anna McDaniel (Taunton, Mass.) collected 10 points and three rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Nichols shot 36 percent from the floor and converted 24 turnovers into 21 points.
 
Juniors Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) and Jacqueline Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) paced the Lions – who outrebounded the Bison 45-35 – with 14 points each. Senior BreAnna Fraser and junior Ashley Rendon (La Puente, Calif.) each dropped in 11 points as Eastern Nazarene shot 41 percent from the field and canned nine 3-pointers.
 
The visitors made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and held a five-point lead after one behind nine points from Holmes. Packard led the Bison with eight points in the opening 10 minutes. The Lions added to their lead in the second quarter as both Rendon and Holmes scored 11 points in the first half, making it 38-30 at halftime. Nichols shot 41 percent in the opening half and saw both Packard and Daniels score eight points.
 
The Bison mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 12-2 in the opening six minutes to take a 42-40 lead. The two schools traded the lead one more time in a third quarter which ended with the visitors ahead 49-46. Nichols got to within two (52-50) following a jumper by Packard early in the fourth before a layup by senior Jessica Franco (Phoenix, Ariz.) gave ENC a nine-point lead with 5:41 to go. The lead grew to as many as 13 down the stretch.

Tonight's contest marked the 39th all-time meeting between Nichols College and Eastern Nazarene College. The Bison lead the series, 22-17, but have lost six-straight and 10 of the last 11 meetings.
