BOSTON, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader from Wentworth Sunday afternoon at Carr Softball Diamond.
Â
Game One: Nichols 8, Wentworth 5
Junior
Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) and
Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.), and sophomores
Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) and
Kasey Ayer (Niantic, Conn.), each had two hits and an RBI for the Bison.
Â
Nichols scored two runs in each of the first three innings and led 6-3 after four. Junior
Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman
Callie Andrews (Southbridge, Mass.) also drove in one run, and junior
Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) tossed seven innings to earn the win, her fifth of the season. She struck out a season-high eight. Â
Â
Freshman Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) plated a pair of runs for the Leopards with a single in the second. In the circle, she also allowed eight hits and seven runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings of work to fall to 1-10.
Â
Game Two: UNE 5, Nichols 2
Freshman
Zoe Chevrette (Wilbraham, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Bison completed their seventh consecutive sweep of the Leopards. Fountain also recorded three hits and plated a pair of runs as Nichols pounded out 13 hits.
Â
Chevrette had a pair of run-scoring doubles – one in the first and another in the sixth – while Meehan had an RBI triple and Ayer an RBI double. That was more than enough run support for Sears, who held Wentworth to three hits and one run in seven innings to improve to 4-6 on the year.
Â
Freshman Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) surrendered 13 hits and eight runs (six earned) in seven innings of work as she fell to 3-9.
Â
