Bison earn split with first-place Endicott

DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman Brianna Kilborn (North Brookfield, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI as the Nichols College softball team rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Endicott College in the opener to defeat the Gulls 4-1 in game two Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Nichols Softball Field.

Classmate Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) finished game two 3-for-4 with one run scored and also earned the win in the circle, hurling seven innings of one-run ball. She scattered eight hits and did not walk a batter to move to 2-5 on the season. The Bison – who had lost their previous 10 contests to Endicott – earned their second-ever win against the Gulls.

Endicott  junior Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) opened game two with a single and later scored on a passed ball to put the Gulls (10-10, 7-2 CCC) in front 1-0. The Bison answered with three in the second, the first coming on an RBI single by sophomore Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.). Kilborn followed with a two-run single through the left side.

Nichols (6-14, 2-8 CCC) tacked on another in the fifth when Meehan led off with a single and scored on a single off the bat of junior Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.). Endicott sophomore starter Leigh Wyman (South Freeport, Maine) was tagged for eight hits and four earned runs in 4.0 innings to fall to 1-6.

In the opener, the Gulls scored twice in the first and once in both the second and third innings to build a 5-0 lead. Corda went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored while junior Sam DiBella (Danvers, Mass.) finished the contest 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Bison scored a pair in the seventh as sophomore Samantha DiReda (Shrewsbury, Mass.) single to drive in two runs (one earned).

Fountain took the loss for Nichols, surrendering nine hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings. She walked one and struck out five. Junior Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) picked up her eighth win as she allowed seven hits and one earned run over seven.

The Bison travel to Worcester State for a pair Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. The Gulls play two at Wentworth Monday beginning at 3 p.m.
