Bison drop season-opener in overtime at Rivier, 11-10

NASHUA, N.H. – Senior Michael Bane (North Grafton, Mass.) potted five goals in Nichols College's 11-10 overtime loss at Rivier College Wednesday night in non-conference men's lacrosse action.

Bane also picked up two assists while junior Anthony Verville (Portland, Maine) tallied three goals and one assist in the season-opener for both. Junior Brian Hancock (Groton, Mass.) – who missed all but one game last season – recorded a goal and two assists.

Freshman Tyler Tambouris (Hooksett, N.H.) paced the Raiders with four goals and an assist. Freshman Joe Kelland (Watertown, Mass.) racked up three goals and one helper while junior Kyle Graham (Londonderry, N.H.) notched a goal and three assists.

The Bison entered the fourth quarter down 10-6 before ripping off four goals to tie the game and force overtime. Senior Corey Davis (Wakefield, Mass.) scored a man-up goal 2:31 into the frame to make it 10-7 before Verville's third of the game at 9:38 brought Nichols to within two at 10-8. Bane's fifth and final marker of the afternoon with five minutes and change on the clock cut the deific to one, and Hancock's first off a feed from Bane with 3:16 to go in regulation knotted the score at 11.

Tanbolis ended the game at 2:12 of the extra session.

Rivier (1-0) went 3-for-14 with the extra man and held a 40-31 edge in shots. Freshman James Keane (Franklin, Mass.) registered 18 saves in his first collegiate start for Nichols. Sophomore Steven Oldakowski (Bethlehem, Conn.) collected a team-high five ground balls.

Nichols (0-1) opens the home portion of its schedule Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Anna Maria. Rivier hosts Maine Farmington Saturday at 1 p.m.
