Lecey, Larson score first collegiate goals in 4-1 win over Leopards

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - Junior Steve Lecey (Cedarburg, Wis.) picked up a goal and an assist in Nichols College's 4-1 win over Wentworth in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Wednesday night at Levy Rink.

Junior Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) turned aside 36 shots to earn his 14th win of the season and was also credited with the empty net goal at 19:01 of the third period, the first of his career. The win extends Nichols' win streak to five and lifts its record to 16-3-2 on the season (8-1-1 ECAC Northeast).

The Leopards (9-10-2, 4-5-1 ECAC Northeast) outshot the Bison 14-10 in the first period but found themselves down 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. Senior defenseman Chris Gularte (Salinas, Calif.) set the tone right off the opening face-off with a huge hit on an unsuspecting Wentworth student-athlete as both teams played a chippy game early on.

The Bison struck first at 13:07 when Lecey sent a wrist shot through a screen and into the top right corner. Junior Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up the primary helper with a feed from behind the net out to Lecey.

Prescott's ninth goal in his last 11 games doubled the Bison lead 1:15 into the second. Senior Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) started the play with a pass to classmate Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) at the right point. The defenseman's wrister towards the net was knocked down by the stick of a WIT defenseman, but Prescott got the rebound, spun, and got off a shot that found the back of the net.

Late in the period, the Bison capitalized on an offensive zone draw and extended their lead to 3-0. Prescott got the puck to Lecey at the point, and the rebound off his shot came right to Butler, who sent a backhand shot into the top of the net at 19:59.

Wentworth got on the board 3:21 into the third when junior Adam Frank (Clarkston, Mich.) crashed the net, found the puck in a scrum, and pushed it behind Larson. The Leopards pulled the goalie with 90 seconds left in regulation for an extra attacker in hopes of tying the game. The puck was played from the left corner back to the left point, but it hopped over a defenseman's stick and rolled down the ice into the vacated net. Larson was the last Nichols skater to touch the puck.

Junior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alberta) got the starting nod in goal for Wentworth and stopped 29 shots - including a penalty shot in the second period - to fall to 4-6-1. The Leopards outshot Nichols 37-33 and failed to score on both of their PP chances. The Bison capitalized on one of their three chances with the man advantage.

The Bison host Salve Regina Saturday at 4:40 p.m. The Leopards host Becker Saturday at 4 p.m.
