Prescott's hat trick lifts Nichols past Skidmore, 7-3

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Junior Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.) recorded a natural hat trick in the second period to propel the Nichols College men's ice hockey team to a 7-3 win over Skidmore College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Levy Rink.

Sophomore Joey Quintana (East Setauket, N.Y.) potted his first collegiate goal, senior Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) dished out three assists, and senior Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) and junior Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) each handed out a pair of helpers as the Bison improved to 8-2-2 on the season. Junior Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) recorded 44 saves to earn his seventh win of the season.

The Thoroughbreds (2-10-1) opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the contest when sophomore Marc Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) was awarded a penalty shot and beat Larson through the legs for his sixth of the season. Less than three minutes later, Skidmore doubled its lead when junior Ondrej Krajnak (Presov, Solvakia) put home his second of the season of a feed from sophomore Anthony Bird (Central Square, N.Y.).

Junior Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio) cut the Thoroughbreds lead in half at 5:44 with his third of the season. Freshman Scott Cuthrell (Waterford, Mich.) sent Sposit in alone, where he beat sophomore Jack McDonald (King City, Ontario) through the legs. Nichols tied the game at two on a PP goal from junior Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) at 13:16. Shapiro slid the puck to classmate Chris Gularte (Salinas, Calif.) at the point, and he let a shot go that was knocked down in front and poked home by Butler for his fourth of the season.

Quintana put the Bison ahead for good at 3-2 when he redirected a shot from the left point from sophomore Steve Lecey (Cedarburg, Wis.) inside the left post at 16:05. Senior Mike Schiavone (Chicago, Ill.) picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

Prescott's first goal at 9:25 of the second capped off a power-play breakout by the Bison. Jackson hit Beasley with a pass in the slot, who then fed Prescott cutting at the left side of the net for the tip-in. His second goal at 11:06 was scored in close with assists going to Butler and Shapiro. He capped off the hat trick at 13:08 when Beasley sent a breakout pass form his own end to Prescott, who skated in alone and went backhand shelf for his fourth of the season and third in a span of 3:43.

Skidmore capitalized on a 5-on-3 later in the stanza when freshman Connor Pelkey (St. Albans, Vt.) beat Larson with a snap shot over the blocker at 15:40 to make it 6-3. Krajnak was credited with the lone assist on the play as Skidmore outshot the Bison 20-15 in the second.

Junior Sean Fleming (Easthampton, N.J.) closed the scoring with 13 seconds left in the third when his backhand on net from the goal line snuck behind McDonald.

Skidmore outshot the Bison 47-44 and saw McDonald finish the evening with 37 saves. Nichols was 4-for-7 with the man advantage while the Thoroughbreds were 1-for-4.

Nichols hosts local rival Assumption Friday at 6:40 p.m. Skidmore hosts Plattsburgh State Friday at 7 p.m.
