Michael Parnell (Roseville, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal midway through the third period to lift the Nichols College men's ice hockey team to a 4-2 win over Castleton Friday night in non-conference action at Levy Rink.

Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) picked up a pair of helpers as the Bison moved to 7-2-2 on the season heading into tomorrow afternoon's home contest with Skidmore at 4:40 p.m. Junior
Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) turned aside 40 shots to earn his sixth win of the season.
Castleton freshman Nathan Cory (Wawanesa, Manitoba) potted his first collegiate goal 7:21 into the third to tie the game at two. Less than two minutes later, Parnell took a pass from senior captain
Mike Schwartz (Long Beach, N.Y.) at the left point and wristed a shot into a half-open net to put Nichols ahead 3-2. Junior
Sean Fleming (Easthampton, N.J.) sealed the win with an empty-netter with 1:28 remaining in the third.
The Spartans outshot the Bison 17-6 in the opening 20 minutes but found themselves tied at one after one. Sophomore Bart Moran (Calgary, Alberta) put Castleton on top 1-0 just 3:28 into the contest when he deflected a point shot past Larson. Junior
Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) evened the game a one at 12:07 as he collected the puck at the left side of the net and waited for freshman Brody Wagner (Shillington, Pa.) to go down before lifting a shot over him for his fourth of the season.
Following a scoreless second period which saw the Spartans outshoot the Bison 12-8, freshman
Scott Cuthrell (Waterford, Mich.) staked Nichols to a 2-1 lead 6:45 into the third. Senior
Chris Gularte (Salinas, Calif.) kept the puck in at the right point and flipped a pass to Cuthrell at the left post. Cuthrell caught the puck, dropped it to his stick and beat Wagner inside the left post.
Castleton – which outshot Nichols 42-22 – failed to convert on four power play opportunities while Nichols was 0-for-3. Wagner finished the night with 18 saves in suffering his first loss of the season.
The Spartans play at Salve Regina Saturday at 7 p.m.
