DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season in Nichols College's 2-1 overtime loss to Western New England University Friday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Vendetti Field.

Freshman Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) tied the game at one in the first half before classmate Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) potted the game-winner 12:52 into the extra session as the Golden Bears (3-5, 1-3 CCC) picked up their first conference win of the season.

Orszulak opened the scoring with a blast off a penalty corner at 20:34. Carlson tied the game at one when freshman Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) took a shot that got behind Cotton, and Carlson poked in the rebound at 29:59.

After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Nichols picked up its play in the second half, outshooting the Golden Bears 15-7 while earning 10 penalty corners. The Bison had several quality scoring chances in the extra session and appeared to win the game when senior Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) knocked in a rebound off a shot from Orszulak, but the play was called back on a dangerous ball.

Minutes later, the Golden Bears capitalized on a 2-on-0 as sophomore Hillary Naranjo-Mejia (Lowell, Mass.) slid a pass to DeLina on the right side of the stroke line for the tap-in.  

Sophomore Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, Maine) stopped seven shots in defeat. Freshman Renee Rossignol (Topsham, Maine) picked up eight saves to earn her third win of the season. Nichols closed the game with a 21-20 edge in shots.

The Bison (2-7, 0-4 CCC) host Endicott on Wednesday, October 1 at 7 p.m. Western New England heads to Wenham, Mass. on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest with Gordon.
