Bison defeat Golden Bears, 80-65

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) led all scorers with 20 points as the Nichols College women's basketball team won their second-straight contest with an 80-65 triumph at Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the AHLC Field House.

Litwinko also snared 11 rebounds while senior Kasey Pelletier (Dunstable, Mass.) added 19 points and classmate Devon Spirka (Wilmington, Vt.) netted 14 points for the Bison (11-10, 6-8 CCC). Sophomore Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) scored a team-high 15 points for the Golden Bears (8-13, 5-9 CCC), who also received 14 points from freshman Samantha Battaini (Leominster, Mass.), who was 4-of-4 from downtown.

Nichols led by as many as 10 in the opening half before settling into a 34-26 halftime lead. Pelletier led all scorers with 11 points while Litwinko and Spirka each netted seven as the Bison rattled home 47 percent of their shots in the first half. Vujs led WNE with seven points.

Junior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) converted a layup at 15:04 of the second half to give the Bison their first double-digit lead at 43-33. They went ahead by 15 on a basket by sophomore Chelsea Mahoney (Dracut, Mass.) six minutes later and led by as many as 16 following a pair of free throws from Pelletier with 5:34 remaining.

The Bison shot 53 percent from the field (25-of-47) and turned 18 WNE turnovers into 17 points. Each team pulled down 33 rebounds.

Nichols hosts Endicott Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bears travel to Wentworth Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
