HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Junior
Talia Hohmann (Marina, Calif.) picked up a goal as the Nichols College women's ice hockey team fell to St. Anselm 4-1 in ECAC East action Saturday night at Levy Rink.
The Hawks were led by senior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) contributed with a goal and an assist apiece. Senior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) and freshman Alexandra Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) also scored for the Hawks.
Foss got things going for St. Anselm at the 4:00 mark of the first period with a shot from center ice that happened to find its way through traffic and by junior goalie
Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Junior defenseman Franny Nicholson (St. Paul, Minn.) was credited with an assist on the play.
Nichols (4-17-0, 2-10-0) answered at 9:56 as sophomore
Erin Dice (Ashburn, Va.) passed it over to junior
Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) around the goal. Murphy took a shot that deflected off of freshman goalie Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) and Hohmann was able to drive it in to the back of the net.
Saint Anselm (17-3-0, 10-2-0) picked up two more goals in the stanza to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The score remained that way until 2:12 into the third period when the Hawks put the icing on the cake with a goal by Starzyk. Sophomore Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) and junior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) were both credited with assists on the play.
Gianformaggio picked up 39 saves in the loss while Synnott stopped 21 Bison shots to improve to 8-0-0 on the season.
"They are a good team for a reason," said Nichols first-year head coach
Wil Brown. "With an offense like theirs, it takes a real commitment to defense, which I believe we did well, but Saint Anselm is just a really deep team."
Nichols hosts Saint Michael's on Friday in a conference match beginning at 6:40 p.m. at Levy Rink. Saint Anselm hosts Holy Cross Friday at 4:00 p.m.
