Lyons run past Bison, 7-1

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College field hockey team suffered a 7-1 home loss to Mount Holyoke College in non-conference field hockey action Thursday evening at Vendetti Field.

Junior Andrea Wilson (New Bedford, N.H.) scored her third goal of the season for the Bison (0-3), who were outshot 33-7 on the evening. Junior Diana Banmann (Hanover, Germany) scored three goals to push her team-leading total to seven while junior Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) tallied twice for the Lyons (2-0).

Following Wilson's breakaway goal off a feed from junior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) 6:31 into the contest, the Lyons reeled off seven unanswered goals. They led 2-1 at halftime behind goals by Banmann at 7:19 and junior Christine Ianni (Wilmington, Del.) at 29:45. The Bison trailed by only one despite being outshot 16-4 as junior Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded seven saves through the opening 35 minutes.

Mount Holyoke blew the game open with three goals in a span of 5:59 in the second half to build a 5-1 lead. Banmann's second of the night off a feed from Ianni made it 3-1 at 43:18, then Kilburn converted a penalty stroke four minutes later to make it 4-1. Following freshman Charlotte Wagner's (West Chester, Pa.) second goal of the season at 49:17, Kilburn took the ball at the top of the circle and deked through three Bison before firing a shot past freshman Carmen Garcia (West Springfield, Mass.) at 64:51. Banmann's third marker of the night at 64:51 capped the scoring.

Freshman Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) recorded one saves to move to 2-0 on the season. Melanson finished the night with 12 saves before Garcia played the final 17:32 and made one save. Mount Holyoke held a 33-7 edge in shots.

The Bison return to action on Sept. 10 with a 7 p.m. contest at Worcester St. The Lyons host RPI Saturday at noon.
