Smith knocks off Nichols, 5-1

Box Score

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Junior Andrea Wilson (Bedford, N.H.) scored her second goal of the season in Nichols College's 5-1 loss at Smith College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon.

The win snaps the Bison's (0-2) four-game winning streak against Smith, which opened its season with a win for the first time since 2008.
The Pioneers outshot the Bison 24-4 on the afternoon. Allie Stein and Alexa DeJesus forced saves from Nichols junior starting goalie Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.), and Stein broke through in the 15th minute with her 50th career goal. The senior took one touch from Petru Bester's corner and slammed a shot past Melanson for a 1-0 lead.

Stein had a hand in the next two Smith goals, as she teed up Marissa Vara for a 2-0 lead at the 24:04 mark, then added her second and Smith's third three minutes before halftime, taking a pass from Emma Camilleri and scoring from close range. Smith nearly had a fourth before the half, but substitute freshman goalie Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, Maine) wrapped up Casey Rau's effort in the final seconds of the half.

The Bison broke up the shutout 1:19 into the second half when Wilson knocked in a pass from freshman Taylor Robohm (North Easton, Mass.), but Smith restored its three-goal lead in less than 30 seconds. Jenny Estes' shot from distance beat the third Nichols goalie of the day, freshman Carmen Garcia (West Springfield, Mass.), to make it a 4-1 Smith lead.

The Pioneers continued to pile on the pressure, earning five straight corners, and scored their fifth goal when Kat Estes broke her collegiate duck with an unassisted tally.

Abbey Petronzio played all 70 minutes in goal for Smith and recorded three saves. In addition to Melanson, Cotton, and Garcia, freshman Ariana Beauregard (Coventry, R.I.) played in net for Nichols. Melanson made two saves while Cotton made four.

The Bison host Mount Holyoke Thursday at 7 p.m. Smith heads to Vassar College to compete in the Betty Richey Tournament and opens play with a 7 p.m. game against Bay Path on Friday.
