Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Kaylee McNamara (Watertown, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Nichols College field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Roger Williams University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday night at Vendetti Field.

Senior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Bison, who picked up their first win of the season in their inaugural meeting with the Hawks (2-2). Freshman Melora Lavoie (Portland, Maine) registered seven saves for the visitors.

Broughton opened the scoring 14:35 into the contest when the one-timed a pass from Orszulak into the left side of the net. McNamara doubled the Bison lead just over three minutes later when she knocked in a rebound off a shot from Broughton for her first goal of the season.

Later in the session, Broughton slid a pass to McNamara in close, and she slammed it home for her second of the night and the season at 21:12. The Bison closed the first half with a 17-5 edge in shots.

In the second half, Utter poked in a rebound that was lying on the goal line 43 seconds in to make it 4-0 Nichols. Orszulak's second of the season off a rebound from McNamara's shot capped the Bison scoring at 46:41. Freshman Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) spoiled junior Molly Melanson's (Simsbury, Conn.) shutout bid when she fired home a shot off an insertion pass from classmate Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

"It was really nice to put some points on the board tonight," said Bison head coach Kristan Mallet. "It was nice to see the excitement level of the team tonight raised tonight. We had some good play from our midfield. They were more involved in the offense tonight. We're just going to keep working."

Melanson recorded five saves to earn the win. Nichols outshot Roger Williams 28-12.

The Bison return to action Saturday when they head to Beverly, Mass. for a 1 p.m. contest against defending conference champion Endicott. The Hawks play at Gordon Saturday at 1 p.m.
