Bison upended by Thomas in opener, 3-2

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Andrea Wilson (Bedford, N.H.) each scored for Nichols College, which suffered a 3-2 loss to non-conference foe Thomas College in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Vendetta Field.

Junior Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded 13 saves for the Bison (0-1), who were outshot 24-15 on the afternoon. Senior Jasmine Bishop (Waterville, Maine) recorded six saves in the win.

Senior Lauren Hachey (Oakland, Maine) notched the game-winning goal for the Terriers (1-0) 10:25 into the second half, one-timing a feed from classmate Miranda Tinsman (Belgrade, Maine) past Melanson.

The Terriers grabbed a 1-0 lead on Sophomore Michelle Greene's (Winslow, Maine) unassisted marker 2:13 into the game. Broughton tied the game at one when she knocked a pass from junior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) inside the left post at 20:49.

Less than three minutes later, Tinsman put the visitors in front with a penalty stroke goal at 22:34. Her shot beat Melanson to the stick side. Hachey's marker pushed the Terriers lead to 3-1 early in the second half before Wilson's marker at 50:54 cut the deficit to one. Orszulak picked up her second assist of the afternoon on the goal. The contest ended when Nichols failed to convert on a penalty corner as time expired.

"That game did not go how I thought it would," said Nichols head coach Kristan Mallet. "It was an eye-opener for me as well as our team. We have to work on our positioning and execute what we practice. We have to continue to work on our communication skills as a team. We'll be OK eventually, but we have a long way to go."

The Bison return to action on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. contest at Smith. Thomas plays at Bridgewater State Sunday at 1 p.m.
