WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore
Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) scored two of Nichols College's three power-play goals en route to a 4-1 win over Worcester State in the semifinals of the Worcester City Shootout Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Horgan Memorial Rink.
Freshman
Mike Weaver (Wakefield, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal – a power-play marker 16:52 into the first period – as the Bison improved to 5-1-1 with the win. They advance to face Assumption in the championship Sunday night at 7:30 p.m.; the Greyhounds rolled past Becker 6-0 in the other semifinal contest on Saturday.
Sophomore
Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) dished out three assists while classmate
Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.) registered a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie
Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced to earn his fifth win of the season.
Weaver netted the only goal of the opening stanza with assists going to junior
Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio) and Prescott, who doubled the Nichols lead with a PP goal at 13:11 of the second. Beasley and junior
Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) picked up assists on the goal.
Less than two minutes later, Butler's third power-play goal of the season off a feed from Sposit gave Nichols a 3-0 lead. Beasley was credited with the second assist on Butler's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Worcester State freshman Michael Dery (Grand Rapids, Mich.) spoiled Larson's shutout bid with 3:01 left in regulation with his first of the season. Butler's second goal of the evening with 20 seconds left from Beasley closed the scoring.
Nichols outshot the Lancers 37-30 and killed off all four of their power play opportunities. WSC sophomore Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, Mass.) stopped 33 shots for the Lancers (3-4-1).
