Nor'easters capitalize on penalty corners to defeat Bison, 5-2

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) scored her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season in Nichols College's 5-2 loss to the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action Wednesday night at Vendetti Field.

Junior Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) picked up her second assist of the season on Orszulak's first marker. For the Nor'easters, junior Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) scored a pair of goals while senior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied a goal and two assists and senior Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) dished out three apples.

Warren opened the scoring at 15:00, converting on the first of three goals off penalty corners for UNE. Tavella inserted the ball to Warren, who blasted a shot inside the left post. Nichols tied the game 3:03 later when Dalrymple sent a long pass into the box that Orszulak shot past freshman goalkeeper Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.).

The Nor'easters responded with four-straight goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Sophomore Alyssa Kowal's (Barre, Mass.) put UNE ahead for good at 26:47 as her shot deflected in off a body in front of the net. The first half closed with the Nor'easters holding a 7-5 edge in shots and an 8-5 edge in corners.

Junior Erin Bibber (Charlton, Mass.) picked up the eventual game-winner when she knocked a pass from LaPointe into an empty net at 40:51. Warren's second marker of the night off a penalty corner at 51:32 made it 4-1. Tavella inserted the ball to LaPointe, who slid a short pass to her left to Warren, whose shots trickled through the legs of Nichols junior goalkeeper Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.).

Just over six minutes later, UNE's third goal off a corner gave it a 5-1 lead. LaPointe's touched a pass over to junior Beth Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I.), who slid the ball down low to Tavella at the left side of the net. Her shot beat Melanson through the five-hole. Orszulak's second goal of the evening off her own rebound at 64:39 capped the scoring.

UNE outshot the Bison 13-6 in the second half to bring the final total to 20-11 in its favor. Smith finished with three saves to move to 5-2 on the season while Melanson recorded eight saves. Orszulak led Nichols with five shots with senior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Jenn Townsend (Wethersfield, Conn.) each had two.
